"Our hands are tied!"
How often have we heard,
or said,
that?
How many times
have we experienced the helplessness
of the experience of
"Nothing can happen
until something else does."
Stalemate
often becomes Checkmate
because of one thing
canceling out another
and nothing is done
when something needs to be done.
I'm talking Power of Attorney
and Healthcare Power of Attorney
here.
Have you legally designated someone
to have both
when it comes to the authority to make decisions
you may be incapable of making?
If not, do so soon!

I had to get out of the Mississippi Delta
to have a chance.
I was born in Greenwood, Mississippi
and spent the first five years of my life
in Itta Bena, Mississippi,
10 miles from Greenwood,
with some of those years shared
with Starkville, Mississippi,
where my father attended and graduated from
Mississippi State University
on the GI Bill.
Then to Leland, Mississippi,
and back to Greenwood for the third grade,
then to Monroe, Louisiana,
following my Dad's job,
and new ways of thinking about
how things are
and how things ought to be.
Somewhere along the way,
I began to follow my own interests,
and ask my own questions,
exploring where they led
and not taking anyone's answers
for my own.
The freedom to question everything
was not allowed in the Mississippi Delta,
and to a large extent,
still isn't.
But it is my grounding foundation
and is responsible for where I am,
and for where I will be.
Not that it is looked upon fondly
outside the Mississippi Delta.
People everywhere are resistant
to asking questions of religion
that call out their cherished assumptions
and convictions,
and comfortable ways of thinking and being.
Jesus knocked down all the holy
ways of doing things,
and paid the price.
Some things never change.
And that's the problem.
Refusing to change is
life in the Mississippi Delta
forever.
There are better options available
for the price
of questioning everything.
Forever.
